Breakout: Home Automation and Inter-device communication
- Home automation systems have low market penetration
- Need to balance energy-efficiency with user comfort
- User interactions with system are different in commercial and non-commercial settings
- Two models of systems
* simple: nagging, lease, "liberal paternalism" * "do nothing unless told to do otherwise" * activity-based, inferring system * interaction involving calendars / scheduling * system can access calendar and make smart decisions on behalf of user * system can use information from calendar to try to influence user behavior
- details of inter-device communication not so interesting, but coordination between devices interesting
* lights in a system turning off at same time * if blinds drawn, lights shouldn't be on * devices turning on at the same time after blackout
- incentivize "good" user behavior
* recommendations at the end of month * penalize user for being inefficient
